ThirdLove Parents Share Their Tried-and-True Advice

“My five-year-old told me that I need to take more photos of her. When I asked why, she said it’s because she’s much older than her sister and will die first so her sister will probably want to look at pictures of her after she dies — she currently has no illness or reason to believe that this is a possibility.”– A true story from a ThirdLove Parent

Unpredictable in the best, oftentimes hilarious, ways, parenthood is a journey you don’t know until you’ve gone through it. Rather than muse on what advice we think parents need in the early days, we went straight to the source and asked our ThirdLove Parents for experience-based advice, tips, and product recommendations for soon-to-be and newbie parents.

What’s one thing you wish you’d known before you became a parent?

Going to Target by yourself will feel like a vacation. Accept all babysitting offers, and don’t feel guilty for taking some time for yourself, even if it is just to do errands without a passenger in the cart.

What’s the best piece of parenting advice you’ve ever received?

Never be afraid to ask for help. I gave birth to my son in Hong Kong where my husband and I had no family at the time so we had to lean on our friends for everyday support.

If you could share one parenting tip to a soon-to-be new parent, what would it be?

Take a million pictures, even if you think you have already taken a million, keep going and take a million more. There are never too many!

Is there one must-have item you think every parent should have?

Some me time! Take time to breathe and have a moment to yourself. You will be stronger for it. Promise.

Final words of wisdom?

Never underestimate your child’s intelligence at any age. These kids are smarter and wiser than you think. My son once said to my husband “Daddy, say yes.”My husband was in the middle of a task, and without hesitation, he said, “Yes.” My son replied, “Yes! I can have a biscuit!” KIDS!
