We can all agree on one thing: bras can be uncomfortable! For those with sensitive skin, bras often cause skin issues such as chafing, fungal infections, and boob acne.

The solution? Finding the best bras for sensitive skin. Learn what to look for in your next bra, and say goodbye to irritated skin.

Why do bras irritate my skin?

There are several different reasons your bra could be irritating your skin, from an allergic reaction to a fungal infection. Outlined below are the most common causes of skin irritation while wearing a bra.

Intertrigo

The term “intertrigo” refers to a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection of the skin. These issues can be the result of anything from excessive sweating to chafing and typically form under the breasts. Symptoms include odor, irritation, itching, or pain in the affected area. The best way to prevent intertrigo is to keep the area dry and reduce the rubbing of skin on skin. If you think you could be experiencing intertrigo, you should speak with your general practitioner to find the best solution for you.

Sweat Rash

This is a condition that occurs when you sweat a lot while wearing a bra. Exercise, hot weather, and poor-quality bra materials can all contribute to sweat rash. The primary symptom is a rash that may be itchy and painful, usually located underneath your breasts where the sweat tends to collect most.

Allergic Reaction

You may be allergic to the materials – such as nylon, latex, and nickel – used to make the bra, or even the detergent you are using to wash your bra. If this is the case, you may experience skin irritation or a rash. If you’re sensitive to any materials or chemicals, make sure to check the composition of your bra as well as the ingredients in any detergents or softeners you are using to wash your clothes.

Boobne

Boobne: Acne on your boobs! Those who exercise and sweat a lot can especially be prone to boobne. To prevent boobne, make sure to take off your sports bra as soon as you are done exercising, and wash your bras frequently to prevent bacteria.

How do I stop my bra from irritating my skin?

If your bra causes skin irritation, you have options! Below are a few possible solutions you can try to reduce irritation or prevent it altogether.

Keep the Infected Area Clean and Dry

If you have a rash or infection from your bra, your top priority should be to keep the area clean and dry. Wash the area regularly with warm water and hypoallergenic soap, dry with a clean towel, and avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing or bras that may exacerbate the infection.

Use Antifungal Cream

Consider applying an antifungal cream to the infected area. These creams are designed to help eliminate the fungi behind your infection.

There are several different types and classes of fungal creams available. We recommend speaking with your doctor about which one is best for your infection.

Try a Different Bra Material

Some fabrics can irritate sensitive skin, especially if they close and tight on you as bras typically are. Most who have sensitive skin find that synthetic materials such as nylon, spandex, polyester, and lycra irritate them the most.

If you experience chafing or irritation from your current bra and know that it is made of synthetic materials, consider swapping it out for a new one made from materials such as cotton, bamboo, or silk. These materials are naturally occuring, easy on the skin, and so comfortable.

Make Sure You’re Wearing the Correct Size

A major cause of bra discomfort is wearing the incorrect bra size. In fact, 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size and experience a variety of bra fit issues.

If your bra is too small, it will rub and chafe against your skin. Additionally, the straps and band are more likely to dig into your skin. If you find that your bra is too constricting, consider moving up a cup or band size, and see whether that helps alleviate your bra discomfort. With ThirdLove’s collection, you have the option to choose half-sizes as well for the most comfortable fit. Keep Your Bra Clean

Both sports bras and traditional bras gather sweat and bacteria with every wear. If you wear your bra before you’ve had time to wash it, this increases your chances of getting a yeast or bacterial infection. Experts recommend washing your everyday bra every 2–3 wears. This allows you to keep your bras clean without wearing them out in the wash. As for sports bras, you should wash them after each workout!

Washing your bras correctly plays a huge role in their longevity, so make sure to follow our handy guide to washing your bras to take care of them.

Go Wireless

While wired bras offer great support, it can be difficult to find your perfect size. And if you’re not wearing the correct size wired bra, the underwire can press or poke your skin.

If you’re unsure of your bra size or are fluctuating between sizes and don’t want to commit to a wired bra, try wireless bras. Wireless bras are more flexible and thanks to their lack of underwire, can feel more seamless and comfortable on the skin.

Which fabric bra is best for daily use?

Experts say that cotton is the best fabric for everyday bras. This natural material makes for a soft bra that’s also hypoallergenic. Cotton is also a durable material, so you can be sure that your cotton bra will be there to support you for a long time.

What is the most breathable bra?

The most breathable bras are made from natural materials, such as cotton or bamboo, and feature minimal or no padding. Lightly lined cotton bras and lightweight unlined bras will be your best friends to maximize airflow and reduce irritation.
