As a company that’s by women, for women, we’re constantly seeking new ways to spotlight stellar females who inspire us. This series is an opportunity to celebrate the ThirdLove community and share their incredible stories.

Say hi to Rachel Platten – recording artist, songwriter, and new mom to an amazing little girl, Violet! We reached out to Rachel to talk about her long list of self-proclaimed passions, discuss how she found her voice in the music industry, and more!

Hometown and current city:
Grew up in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Currently, live in LA.

Day job/side hustle/passion project:
Recording artist, songwriter, yogi, way too competitive (but not skilled) athlete, crystal enthusiast, long walk taker, fake therapist to friends, and most important, mommy to a strong and amazing little girl, Violet.

Tell us about your personal journey. What inspired you to do what you’re doing now?
I took piano lessons at a young age and sang in acapella groups, but never believed I was talented enough to take it seriously as a profession until I started writing songs at 19 and played my first concert (as a backup singer) while studying abroad in Trinidad. Then the desire to be an artist took over me completely and led to 15 years of struggling to “make it” from then on. I lived in NYC for years and would play small bars and random gigs, even in people’s living rooms before I was able to find my sound and the songs that I eventually wrote were impactful and real.

When do you feel most confident in your skin?
I feel confident when I’m being my most raw vulnerable honest self and knowing even my flaws are ok.

Did you have any insecurities growing up? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?
Absolutely. In my head, I still deal with self-doubt, feeling like I’m not enough, feeling lost, sad and lonely, but I’m learning that those are just thoughts and I don’t have to believe them. I’ve learned to ride out these waves and know that I am the entire ocean.
I also have lots of tools that I use when I am hurting: yoga, walks, the beach, therapy, podcasts, and all the basic white chic stuff really. ;). But they work. Truly. My songs are healing for me as well, I write music to work through hard emotions and above all, I let myself feel deeply. I don’t shove down the darkness, but I invite it to the table and hear it out and then gently let it know it’s not in charge.

Who/what has shaped you to be the person you are today?
I have a truly wonderful, supportive family and an incredible husband, Kevin who I have been with for a very long time. I also surround myself with great friends who lift me up over and over.

“I have found that the more honest and vulnerable I am, the more I give others permission to do the same and to love themselves no matter what.”

What are your proudest accomplishments?
I love being able to help people get through trying times and to empower others through my music. I have found that the more honest and vulnerable I am, the more I give others permission to do the same and to love themselves no matter what.

What impact do you want to leave on the world?
I want to spread huge love and be a light for the world, through owning my own shadows and shining regardless, and showing everyone that they can do the same.

What’s next for you?
I’m currently touring with the Pentatonix while working on new music and a new book.

How do you stay balanced?
See above for all my tools 🙂

What’s your favorite ThirdLove bra and why?
As a new mom, I’m really loving the 24/7 Classic Nursing Bra.
Touring with my daughter, I’m having to nurse in all sorts of different places so the wider front closure comes in handy. The bra is very soft on both my and Violet’s skin and the shape makes my boobs look cute & perky even after a long feed (moms get this 😉 )

Tell us your ThirdLove Story:
The ThirdLove bras are so comfortable and such a perfect fit. Sometimes, when trying new bras you have to go through like 5 or 6 to find one that feels good and fits well. With ThirdLove, every bra I tried fit my body really well.
